Representative Dr. Anna V. Eskamani responds to the Florida House passing Governor DeSantis’ partisan, gerrymandered maps:
Today, the Florida House advanced deeply partisan congressional maps that once again put politics over people.
These maps are not about fair representation—they are about protecting power. They weaken the voices of Floridians, particularly Black and brown communities, and undermine the basic principle that voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around.
We have been down this road before. Courts have already made clear that dismantling fair districts and ignoring voter-approved standards is unacceptable. Yet here we are again, watching a majority push through maps that came from the Governor’s Office via President Trump. Maps that were first leaked to Fox News. Maps that erode trust in our democracy and silence communities.
Floridians deserve better. We deserve maps that reflect our communities, respect our diversity, and uphold the will of the voters who demanded fairness through the Fair Districts amendments.
This fight is not over. We will continue to stand with our communities, challenge these maps in court, and defend the fundamental right to fair representation in Florida.
