Orlando, FL — Last night, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law legislation filed by Representative Dr. Anna V. Eskamani focused on drowning prevention. This new policy marks a major step forward in protecting Florida’s children and families from preventable tragedies.

Drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death for young children in Florida, making proactive education and prevention efforts more urgent than ever. This new law ensures that parents and caregivers receive vital information about drowning risks and water safety, while expanding the state’s Swimming Lesson Voucher Program to reach a broader range of children, helping more families access lifesaving swim education.

“This legislation is about saving lives,” said Rep. Eskamani. “By equipping families with the knowledge and resources they need, we are taking meaningful action to prevent tragedies before they happen.”

Rep. Eskamani also emphasized the bipartisan collaboration that made the bill possible.

In a time of deep political division, this legislation is a reminder that we can still come together to address the issues that matter most. I’m deeply grateful to our Republican co-sponsors and to my Democratic companion in the Senate, Carlos Guillermo Smith, for their partnership and shared commitment to protecting Florida’s children.”

Rep. Eskamani extended her appreciation to the advocates, families, and community members who shared their stories and helped move the legislation forward: “This victory belongs to the families and advocates who spoke up and demanded action. Their voices made this possible, and their courage will help save lives.”

The new law takes effect on July 1st, and the next step will be to ensure its full implementation.
