Orlando, FL: Yesterday Florida’s State University System Board of Governors voted unanimously to ban undocumented students from attending the state’s 12 public universities. Here is her statement in response:
“Yesterday the Board of Governors voted unanimously to slam the door on kids who have done everything we asked of them. Kids who grew up here, graduated from our public schools, and want nothing more than to build a life in the state they call home. This is such bad policy that the legislature never passed it. It does not make Florida stronger; it hurts our economy and is cruel for the sake of being cruel.
As the daughter of immigrants and a graduate of Orange County Public Schools and UCF, I know what a public university education makes possible. Every child in this state deserves that shot. We will keep fighting for every student to have the freedom to thrive in our state.”
