Orlando, FL — Today 14 Iranian-American elected officials and candidates have released a letter of solidarity with the women and people of Iran as they risk their lives for freedom. Representative Anna V. Eskamani is one of the signers. Born in Orlando, Eskamani is the daughter of two Iranian immigrants who came to the United States in search of the American Dream.
The letter can be found here and outlines three main requests of the Biden Administration and global community. The signers first ask that all discussions on the JCPOA should be paused, and instead the U.S. government should provide assistance in maintaining internet access so that the people of Iran may continue to expose the injustices of their daily lives. The signers also urge citizens to call their federal representatives to push for a U.N. Investigative Mechanism for crimes against humanity committed by the Islamic Republic and that the Islamic Republic be immediately removed from the U.N. Women’s Commission.
The signers also vehemently oppose all efforts and remarks (past and present) by anyone downplaying the brutality of the Islamic Republic and call for unity among the Iranian-American diaspora.
“As an elected official and Iranian-American, I advocate for freedom and equality every day, and that is what drives me to serve our communities and sign on to this letter today,” said Representative Eskamani. “It’s incredibly important to me that the people of Iran know that they are not alone, that we hear their cries for Women, Life, Freedom and regime change. We will continue to be their voice.”
