Orlando, FL – It is essential to embrace conversations around mental health to ensure the long-term safety and wellbeing of our communities. Representative Anna V. Eskamani will host a virtual event on Tuesday, May 17 at 11:00 AM in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month which is recognized throughout the month of May.

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949 and was first recognized by Mental Health America. According to The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental health condition, yet more than half have not received any treatment in the last year.

Although over 60 million Americans from diverse backgrounds live with mental illness each day, the brunt of this public health burden is borne by members of minority and marginalized communities. The National Alliance on Mental Illness further determined that while 2.9 million adults in Florida have a mental health condition, they must also navigate substantial barriers to care as they are 5x more likely to be forced out-of-network.

The program agenda will explore advocacy issues, bring awareness to mental health, explain ways to destigmatize mental illnesses, and examine mental health issues across personal and cultural dimensions. The event will feature Pernell Bush, LCSW, CNP of K.E.Y Counseling Solutions, a clinical social worker and leader in issues across the mental health space.
