Every October, our nation observes National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month serves as a vital opportunity to honor victims and survivors of domestic violence, while also promoting healthy relationships and educating communities around detecting the signs of abuse.

This observance has been a national tradition for 35 years, beginning in October 1989. While we strive year-round to raise awareness about domestic violence, October provides a special moment for focused efforts to minimize its occurrence in our communities. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), 37.9% of women and 29.3% of men in Florida are victims of domestic violence by family members or partners in their lifetimes. These numbers are likely even higher, as many cases go unreported, making it impossible to fully capture the scope of the issue.

We are all called to listen to and support those impacted by domestic violence, extending compassion, empathy, and understanding. This can be done by sharing resources or even just being there for somebody in need. Each and every one of us can contribute to a safer, more supportive environment for survivors.

In addition to providing support, we can also take action by advocating for stronger policies and protections for victims. Educating ourselves and others about the warning signs of abuse and encouraging open dialogue about healthy relationships are ways we can help promote change.
