As Another Hurricane Season Begins, Florida Governor and Legislative Leadership Fail to Address the Growing Climate Crisis

Orlando, FL – On Earth Day 2022, State Representative Anna V. Eskamani (D-Orlando) and 27 other state representatives sent a letter to Governor Ron DeSantis urging him to declare a State of Emergency for our climate. Since that time, hundreds of Floridians have echoed that call by sending their own individual letters to the Governor asking him to take climate action.

Last week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted a 65% chance of an above-average 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. This marks the seventh consecutive year in a row that NOAA has predicted above-average storm production.

On Wednesday, June 1 at 11am – the first day of Hurricane Season – Rep. Eskamani, Rep. Guillermo Smith, & Rep. Goff-Marcil, will host a virtual press conference alongside advocates to discuss the urgent need for Executive Leadership to address the climate crisis and the failure of legislative leadership to discuss the growing threat of climate-fueled hurricanes during last week’s special legislative session on property insurance.
