There is no question that Floridians need meaningful relief right now—but this proposal from Governor DeSantis is not a tax break, it’s a tax shift.
Instead of lowering costs, it risks redistributing them in ways that disproportionately harm renters and working families, while undermining the essential services our communities depend on like public safety, infrastructure, libraries, parks, and more.
The concept of a statewide trust fund only raises more questions than answers. Who is paying into it? And what strings will be attached? Will local governments be forced to go hat-in-hand to Tallahassee just to fund basic services? Will funding come with political conditions that override local priorities and values?
We’ve seen this pattern before: efforts to centralize power in the State Capitol while stripping decision-making away from local communities. That approach has consistently failed Floridians.
I will reserve final judgment until we see the full legislative text, but at face value, this proposal raises serious concerns about fairness, transparency, and the future of local governance in our state.
