Orlando, FL: Yesterday, Florida Phoenix reported that Florida’s Republican sheriffs want President Donald Trump to end mass deportations of undocumented immigrants who haven’t committed crimes, a striking shift from law enforcement in the nation’s most aggressive anti-immigration state.

“While Congress sits on their hands and does nothing about this, we are on the ground floor with this day in and day out — looking in the eyes of these folks that, yes, came here inappropriately. But some came here inappropriately only to do better for themselves and their family,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Monday during a State Immigration Enforcement Council meeting.

“Florida sheriffs pushing back against President Trump’s and Governor DeSantis’ mass deportation efforts underscore what many of us have been warning for years: forcing local law enforcement to act as immigration agents is bad policy and makes our communities less safe. Sheriffs are speaking out because they know their job is to build trust, solve crimes, and keep people safe, not to carry out politically motivated mandates from Washington or Tallahassee. When immigrant families are afraid to report crimes or cooperate with law enforcement, everyone is put at risk.

This moment is a reminder that public safety works best when it is rooted in trust, accountability, and local decision-making, not fear and overreach. We should support our local law enforcement with the resources they need to stop crime, not burden them with policies that undermine their effectiveness and divide our communities.

I will also note that, based on recent polling, the majority of registered voters disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of immigration. Even more reason to move away from these dangerous policies and pursue comprehensive immigration reform that welcomes hardworking people to our country and offers a clear path to citizenship.”
