Orlando, FL: Last night Zohran Mamdani made history in winning a New York City Mayoral Democratic Primary, not only as one of the youngest candidates to win such an important seat but also doing so while being outraised by a powerful opponent.

Here is what Representative Eskamani thinks Florida Democrats can learn from his race:

Zohran Mamdani’s campaign in New York offers an inspiring and instructive model for Democrats across the country — including here in Florida. In a political landscape dominated by soundbites and cynicism, Mamdani stood out as a leader defined by authenticity, sincerity, and deep commitment to the people he serves.

What sets Mamdani apart is not just his policy platform — it’s the way he builds power. He organizes year-round, not just during election cycles, and his work doesn’t stop when the campaign ends. Whether it’s knocking doors in public housing or joining tenants fighting eviction, he shows up consistently and unapologetically. That kind of sustained, community-rooted organizing is exactly what Florida Democrats need to invest in if we want to win — and keep — the trust of everyday people.

Mamdani doesn’t shy away from bold and brave ideas. He talks about housing as a human right, taxing the billionaire classending corporate exploitation, and addressing systemic injustice with moral clarity and policy fluency. But just as importantly, he communicates those ideas in plain language, opening the door for more people to participate in the political process. He treats his constituents not as a means to win votes, but as partners in the fight for community change.

In Florida, where voters are constantly targeted by disinformation and distraction, we need more of that transparent, values-driven communication. We need more leaders who listen before they speak — who don’t cancel or condescend, but engage sincerely with people across differences. Mamdani models this with grace and humility. He leads with heart and makes space for real conversations, not just talking points. He also builds partnerships across cultures and generations, creating diverse coalitions based on shared values and goals.

His campaign is a reminder that we don’t need to compromise our values to win. We need to organize with consistency, speak with clarity, build partnerships, and lead with integrity. That’s how we build something bigger than any one election, that’s who we build movements.
