Orlando, FL — Today marks what would have been the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that once guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion in the United States.
Here is Representative Anna V. Eskamani’s statement in response:
“Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, reproductive freedom has faced devastating setbacks, including Florida’s dangerous 6-week abortion ban and ongoing threats of further restrictions. Despite these challenges, we are not giving up. Last year, 57% of Floridians voted to repeal Florida’s near-total abortion ban, sending a clear message: Floridians oppose abortion bans. Across the state, people are stepping up—supporting abortion funds, volunteering, and fighting to protect the right to decide when or if to start a family. Access to abortion care should not depend on who you are, where you live, or how much money you make. Together, as a powerful majority, we will fight for a future where every person has the freedom to make decisions about their body and life. The road ahead will not be easy, but our cause is just, and we will not back down.”
As we reflect on Roe’s legacy, Representative Eskamani encourages everyone to channel their anger and grief into action:
- Organize in our communities to hold state legislators accountable.
- Support organizations working tirelessly to connect people with abortion care.
- Donate to abortion funds in Florida.
- Demand that lawmakers respect our rights and repeal the bans currently in place.
