Dear Friend,

In case you missed this update: the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) recently released a new rule that will move us as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.

Currently, only licensed gun dealers, meaning those holding a Federal Firearms License (FFL), are required to conduct background checks – leaving a gaping loophole with respect to unlicensed sellers of firearms that puts us all at risk. ATF’s new proposed rule clarifies that certain unlicensed individuals are actually “engaged in the business” of selling firearms and therefore must become licensed and conduct background checks as well.

As part of the process of finalizing this much-needed rule, ATF will be collecting public comments until early December. To leave a comment expressing your support – please go to giffords.org/comment.

Please consider sharing this update with your friends and family too.

Onward,

Rep. Eskamani
