Dear Friend,
In case you missed the news, we had a big win for the First Amendment and the LGBTQ+ community last week.
A Florida judge granted an injunction for drag show restaurant Hamburger Mary’s in Orlando against Florida’s “Protection of Children” law that penalizes businesses for hosting drag shows. Basically the state is saying that these are live “adult” performances and if anyone brings their family to attend, the business will be punished.
You can see a recent news report about this below.
This law had resulted in the cancellation of drag shows and the censorship of businesses who wish to express their support for the LGBTQ+ community. Of course, the DeSantis Administration has already appealed this Judge’s decision but nonetheless, this first legal win is a big one.
As Pride month comes to an end, I am reminded of why we fight and why we must think longterm when it comes to building back our collective freedoms and liberties.
Onward,
Rep. Anna V. Eskamani
