Orlando, FL: Today marks one year since the fall of Roe v. Wade, and since then we have seen a wave of anti-abortion laws sweep the nation. Most abortions are now banned in 14 states with Georgia banning abortion at about six weeks of pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant. An additional five states — like Florida — have 12 to 15 week bans in effect. Many bans are still being fought in court; meanwhile anti-abortion extremists are also going after the abortion pill.
Millions of Americans live in states where access to abortion care is out of reach. Here is Representative Eskamani’s statement marking one year since the fall of Roe.
“We often think that as the United States progresses so do our rights and collective freedoms, but that is not the case in the context of reproductive freedom. In fact, we have lost rights as Americans and as women. We have witnessed a conservative court override 50 years of precedent, pushing us back in time and creating a nation where one’s zip code determines their ability to decide their future and destiny. Not only is that wrong but that is unacceptable — which is why in Florida we are fighting back and aiming to codify abortion rights in Florida next year. Today to mark Roe’s falling we are going beyond Roe, in organizing to take back our rights. Despite the obstacles ahead of us, we will not falter, buckle, or lose our focus. We envision a new and brighter Florida, one where reproductive freedom is a reality for all.”
