House Bill 1 is expected to have huge consequences on public education
Orlando, FL – Filed last week, House Bill 1 is a major expansion of school vouchers, and would essentially set up what are known as “education savings accounts,” providing publicly-funded vouchers that families would be allowed to use for private-school tuition and numerous other services and expenses, while public schools lose funding. This bill has been filed for Florida’s Regular Session which begins in March and is on the agenda for its first House committee this Thursday, January 26th.
Representative Anna V. Eskamani will host a virtual event this evening – Monday, January 23rd – from 6:00PM to 6:30PM beside Dr. Norín Dollard, the Senior Policy Analyst and KIDS COUNT Director at Florida Policy Institute to address HB 1. The virtual program will unpack this newly filed bill, which would cause the most dramatic changes to the private voucher program since its implementation more than 20 years ago, and have substantial consequences on public education funding in Florida.
“There are certainly concerns around this expansion because of the lack of transparency and accountability in private schools. These schools can discriminate and are known to discriminate against students with or without vouchers. Right now we’re witnessing attacks on education at every level from our Governor while doing nothing to address the mass teacher exodus in our state,” said State Representative Anna V. Eskamani.
