Dear Reader,
I was born and raised in Orlando to a working class family of immigrants from Iran. One of the most important holidays for my family is Nowruz, the Persian New Year, which falls each year on the spring equinox.
Today marks that day, and from my family to yours I wish you Nowruz Mobarak!
The Persian New Year is celebrated by millions of people worldwide, and dates back to thousands of years. It is a secular holiday, and a celebration of wiping away the dust, grime, and sadness of the old in order to start anew.
Nowruz is more than just one day of celebration. In fact, it actually started last week and goes on for another thirteen days! To learn more about Nowruz, click here.
This November, I will be the first Iranian-American elected to any public office in Florida. I take pride in that, and am grateful for the opportunity to celebrate my family’s traditions with you.
Onward,
Anna
