I had the honor of eating at Hungry Pants before the COVID-19 crisis hit our town. Joey and his husband Alex have worked so hard to create a fun, plant-based experience for their guests.  Right away I was amazed at the cheery atmosphere, the playful whimsy in the decor and the friendly staff who were so patient in answering all of my questions about the menu. I recently had the honor of asking Joey some questions about small business life in the current climate.

What was the inspiration behind Hungry Pants?

Hungry Pants is inspired by the bright cafes and bistros of California and Miami. Food that is approachable, clean and filling. Service that is quick and casual but also slightly elevated. The name Hungry Pants refers to a mood that you might be in. Sort of like Fancy Pants or Smarty Pants. Healthy and clean does not have to be dull or serious, and that’s why we called it Hungry Pants. It’s meant to be playful.

Tell me your favorite thing about running a small business in District 47.

That’s easy. The people and sense of community. This part of Orlando is so interesting, because our patrons have a big city purchasing power and appetites combined with the familiarity and friendliness of a small town. It’s the perfect recipe for a small business to thrive.

What is your favorite order from Hungry Pants?

When I am eating a quick meal (usually standing up), I tend to order our Kale Caesar with Seared Salmon or our Salmon Wrap. They’re both light but filling, and the Salmon gives me the protein I need to charge through the day. If I am taking something home and want a treat, it’s always our Veggie Burger with a side of the MDP (Most Delicious Potatoes).

How can fans of Hungry Pants offer their support right now?

We are reopening for takeout May 1st, so the obvious answer is to order food! Following us on social media (Facebook and Instagram), posting about their experience, and writing reviews on sites like Yelp, all really help. We are still new, so we are still trying to get the word out about our opening…and now, reopening!

We are going to be open 11am-8pm, everyday. Customers can order onsite, online (www.eathungrypants.com), over the phone (407-412-6300) or through third party delivery apps like Uber Eats. We will have a takeout window on our patio, so no one has to enter the building and curbside pick up will also be available for those who’d like it. We’ll be rolling out some new menu items, collaborations and seasonal specials too, so stay tuned!

What gives you hope during these tough times?

The Orlando community gives me hope. In times of crisis, we’re always reminded of what an amazing and supportive community we all live in. If we didn’t have faith in the strength of this community and their support of small business owners, we would be at zero.
