Today, a federal judge denied a request to block Florida’s law banning social media access for young teenagers. The judge ruled that the trade associations challenging the law failed to demonstrate which specific platforms would be affected, leading to the denial of the preliminary injunction. The law was initially set to take effect on January 1, but enforcement had been delayed pending this ruling. It’s currently unclear when enforcement will commence.

Here is Representative Eskamani’s statement in response:
“From the very beginning, state leaders avoided clarifying which companies would be impacted by the social media ban, leaving parents and young people in the dark. Instead of providing clear guidelines, the state pushed forward with broad legislation that is also a direct attack on First Amendment rights. The government should not be in the business of dictating how people, including young people, engage in free speech and access information online. We will continue to watch this legal fight continue and encourage parents and young people to stay informed on the state’s next steps with enforcement.”
