Authentic Books is a monthly subscription box that launched in September 2020, combining reading with self-care. Their boxes feature curated items from small businesses and bestselling authors, engaging all five senses to enhance the reading experience. Targeting professionals, moms, teachers, and more, the service supports women-owned businesses and donates to the Adopt a Classroom program. They’ve recently opened their first brick + mortar, an immersive bookstore in the Ivanhoe Village area. The Authentic Books storefront allows you to build your own book experience, attend bookish events, and use their lounge as a third space. See below for a profile on their business and the importance of celebrating and honoring Black History Month in our Central Florida community!
Tell us about yourself! What inspired you to start your business, and when did you launch it?
I’m Natisha, a self proclaimed book nerd and mother of 3 girls. Being a BPOC, I was taught to work hard, however having a passion for what you’re working towards was not important. I wanted to break that cycle with my own children, so I made it a priority to show by example that it is possible to have a family, have passions, and most importantly, have goals that you can work towards that make you feel fulfilled and empowered. Using my background in Marketing/Sales and my love for reading and creating experiences with my family, I launched Authentic Books in September of 2020. I’ve built a community of book lovers starting from just 25 subscribers my first month, to almost 800 monthly subscribers in less than 3 years and already passing 1M in all-time revenue.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Working with authors of newly released novels to collaborate on specific smells from their story, so we can craft a unique and inspired candle. It’s surreal to be able to collaborate with these authors to custom blend a scent for their book.
As a Black small business owner, how does Black History Month resonate with you? How has your heritage and history influenced your journey as an entrepreneur, and what impact do you hope to make within your community?
Celebrating and highlighting diverse voices, experiences, and makers is the framework for Authentic Books. We continuously feature Black voices and other underrepresented voices in our book boxes and bookstore. I am grateful to have a business and platform that allows me to showcase stories that may not be readily advertised in big box stores, and I hope to continue to expand our reach throughout all communities.
