Sweet Petals Cupcakery opened in 2019 and is a women-owned and Black-owned home-based bakery that created beautifully crafted, high-quality treats for birthdays in Orlando. Inspired by her grandmothers, Betty and Mable, Owner Taneisha Polite wanted to create a meaningful business that could bring people joy and warmth to share with others! See below for a profile on their business and the importance of celebrating and honoring Black History Month in our Central Florida community!
Tell us about yourself! What inspired you to start your business, and when did you launch it?
Taneisha C. Polite is the owner of Sweet Petals Cupcakery. She started baking from a young age, learning from her two grandmothers, Betty and Mable. From what started as just a hobby, had evolved into a full-fledged business. She created Sweet Petals Cupcakery to spread joy and carry forward the legacy of Grandma Betty.
What’s your favorite item to make from your selection of products, and why?
“Definitely the Boucake! It’s my favorite because it lets me be both creative and artistic. I love seeing people’s reactions when they realize the flowers are actually cupcakes—it never gets old! It’s elegant, unique, and truly represents everything I want Sweet Petals CupCakery to be.”
As a Black small business owner, how does Black History Month resonate with you? How has your heritage and history influenced your journey as an entrepreneur, and what impact do you hope to make within your community?
“Black History Month is personal for me—it’s the foundation of my journey. My grandmothers, Betty and Mable, were strong Black women who poured love into everything they did, and they’re the reason I fell in love with baking. They taught me resilience, hard work, and the importance of building something of my own.”
