Orlando, FL: Today the Supreme Court of the United States sharply curtailed the authority of the EPA to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions that cause climate change. In a 6-3 ruling the court sides with conservative states and fossil-fuel companies in adopting a narrow reading of the Clean Air Act. Here is Representative Anna V. Eskamani’s statement in response:
“This is a devastating decision, a huge loss for planet Earth and in large part due to the destructive influence of fossil fuel companies and utilities in America. It was the Republican Attorneys General Association that has led the legal assault on the EPA, and they are heavily funded by special interests including fossil fuel-burning utilities. It’s disgusting that these companies wield so much influence in America, going as far to hire consultants to spy on journalists in Florida and put into place fake candidates too.
My only hope is that this SCOTUS decision wakes up Americans who care about our collective health and the future of our state to stand up against these corporations and demand renewable energy and efficiency goals, to curb our reliance on fossil fuels and build a more sustainable future for all.”
