Tallahassee, FL: Today the Florida House passed SB254, legislation that — among many things — will ban gender affirming care of new minor patients, requires that only MDs and DOs provide gender affirming care, prohibit public funding from going to gender affirming care insurance plans and more. Below is Representative Anna V. Eskamani’s statement in response.
“This is a devastating bill with real life consequences for members of our trans and gender non-conforming community. Though the amended version does remove some awful provisions, the overall effect of the bill will be devastating for those who receive gender affirming care. It’s also important to stress that this bill goes into effect immediately upon being signed into law and it restricts gender affirming care to be provided only by doctors, which will create strict limitations for patients and pull people away from their medical provider. We must continue to fight back against policies that target and demonize already marginalized people and defend trans lives.”
