Orlando, FL: Today during a press conference in Fort Lauderdale Governor Ron DeSantis was asked if he would “take the lead” on the “heartbeat bill,” also known as a six week abortion ban. He responded with: “I’m willing to sign great life legislation. That’s what I’ve always said I would do.”
Here is Representative Anna V. Eskamani’s statement in response:
“Governor Ron DeSantis is an anti-abortion extremist who wants to strip away bodily autonomy for more than half of the state. It should be no surprise to anyone that he avoids even saying the word “abortion” as he is constantly trying to hide his position from the greater public. But here’s what we all know to be true: DeSantis has already signed two anti-abortion bills into law, including a 15 week abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest; DeSantis and his administration continue to defend this and other unconstitutional laws in court and most recently removed a duly elected State Attorney from Hillsborough County primarily due to his positions on abortion.
We also know that the people of Florida overwhelmingly agree that abortion should remain safe and legal. Floridians do not want politicians to get involved in this personal medical decision about ones future and family. That’s why we need every day people to fight back and be engaged. At this point, it’s not a question of if Florida Republicans will ban abortion — it is a question of when.
