Orlando, FL – According to the EPA, three Central Florida landfills are among the top emitters of greenhouse gasses in the country. Landfills like the Orange County Landfill are huge producers of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. The United Nations states that reduction in human-caused methane is possible “by up to 45 percent this decade,” which would have positive effects in reducing global warming by 2045, reducing air pollution, limiting global temperatures, and more.
Representative Anna V. Eskamani will host a community cleanup in partnership with O-Town Compost on Saturday, September 17th from 10:00AM – 12:00PM to celebrate and take action for World Cleanup Day. World Cleanup Day is one of the world’s largest one-day civic actions. According to their 2021 Annual Report, 8.5 million volunteers from 191 countries participated in collecting 53 million kgs of waste. The event allows for volunteers, governments, and organizations to come together to embrace sustainability and tackle global waste.
O-Town Compost is an Orlando-based organization that offers subscription services to its customers: they give customers a bucket with a compostable bag where they can put their food waste in, then they collect it and deliver a 20-pound bucket of compost. According to their website, they help divert 662,361 lbs of food scraps from landfills. The average person generates more than 30 pounds of waste per week—the majority which could be composted instead of going to a landfill. Therefore, correctly disposing of organic, plastic, and other waste is necessary to help create a waste-free community and help stop climate change.
Join us Saturday to take action for World Cleanup Day in our shared vision of a cleaner, waste-free world.
