The Center Orlando is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to empowering and promoting the the LGBTQ+ community and its allies across Central Florida through information, education, advocacy, and support services. Earlier this year, many of their projects and initiatives were vetoed out of the state budget by Governor DeSantis despite approving the largest budget in state history. As community members rally to close the funding gap, we are reminded of the tireless work taking place over in Mills50.

What do you love most about your work with The Center Orlando? The community! I love seeing such a diverse community here in Central Florida and I love the fact that we get to serve them.

What is one thing you think more locals should know about the services and programs at The Center? So many people only know about our HIV services. But we do so much more! We have housing case management, serve the Pulse affected community through the Orlando United Assistance Center, have a cyber center, financial literacy, career planning, legal and immigration referrals, home buyer seminars, addiction and recovery groups, youth programming and our Older, Wiser, Learners program that serve those 55 and over.

What is one memory from The Center Orlando that will always stick with you? I remember on the morning of June 12, 2016, coming to The Center. I knew I wanted to give back to our community who was hurting. I will never forget walking into a sea of people and everyone chose to be here because of all that The Center does for the community. People felt safe and I will never forget that feeling. It is why I applied to be the Executive Director. I cannot think of another place I would rather be.

What advice would you give to someone else wanting to make a difference? I always tell people to tap into their time, treasure, and talent. If you cannot give to a nonprofit financially, then volunteer your time. There are so many worthy organizations in Central Florida.

How can readers get plugged into your organization and show support? The best thing to do is follow us on social media or visit our website at thecenterorlando.org.
