What do you love most about having a small business in House District 47?

District 47 is home to fiercely independent small businesses, artists, and creators. When people want to show visitors the “real Orlando,” they come here. The diversity of food and culture is inspiring and unparalleled, and we’re proud to be a part of it.

What inspired you to begin Eola General and what keeps you going now?

My business partner, Shaun, and I have joked about writing a book titled “For the Love of Old Buildings.” Shaun lived a block away and one of our earlier partners had lived a few doors down. We were in love with the building for years and would daydream about what we would do with it if it were ours. When we heard Devi and Rai, the original owners of the Handy Pantry, announce they were moving on, we knew we had to jump on it. We started paying the rent without even so much as a business model. All we knew was we wanted to retain the “neighborhood meeting place” that our predecessors cultivated. Historically, the building had always been some sort of general store, so it was only logical to continue that role. Knowing we’re doing right by the building and its history is what keeps us motivated.

What advice would you give to someone else wanting to open a small business?

Identify your support structure early. We’ve had some amazing employees and partners over the last couple of years and as a small business owner, you’re going to need good people and strong relationships.

What is one memory from Eola General that will always stick with you?

Last June, during the Black Lives Matter protests, we offered up our backyard as a staging ground for water, food, and medical supplies for the protesters. Seeing folks from all walks of life come together for the greater good was inspiring. We started pulling $200+ a day from our sales to donate to a bail fund for non-violent protesters. This got us a lovely little article on a proud boys/alt right website and honestly that might be the proudest moment of my entire life, not just at Eola General.
