Following calls for special session, these lawmakers have filed a comprehensive legislative proposal to fix unemployment in the 2021 legislative session

Tallahassee, FL — Following months of calls for a special legislative session to address Florida’s criminally broken unemployment system, Representative Anna V. Eskamani (D-Orlando), Representative Ben Diamond (D-St. Petersburg), and Senator Bobby Powell (D-West Palm Beach) have filed a comprehensive legislative proposal to fix the unemployment system in Florida.

House Bill 207 / Senate Bill 592 would among many things set Florida’s Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA) to be at a maximum of $500 and a minimum of $100, increase the amount of weeks available to 26 weeks, establish a three week timeline for the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) to provide an eligibility determination, create an Alternative Base Period (ABP) to allow for greater eligibility and implement an ombudsman to provide an oversight arm over DEO.

State Representatives, State Senators, and community members rolled out this major legislation last week via a virtual press conference you can watch here.
